KurzfilmProgramm: Stadt und Land – offene und öffentliche Räume

Die hier versammelten 'Expeditionen' führen an scheinbar alltägliche, banale Orte, auf vermeintlich bekanntes Terrain. Diese Expeditions-'Forschungen' sind allerdings originär filmisch. Mit filmischen Mitteln werden Naturbetrachtungen oder Stadtansichten nicht einfach nur reproduziert, sondern mit dem Faktor Zeit potenziert. Urbanität, Stadtplanung, Architektur, aber auch Landschaften, Geografien, Naturgewalten werden so ganz anders, dynamisch interpretiert, und können so ganz anders, ungewohnt erlebt werden. (MB)

Maja Deren - AT LAND

Maya Deren was one of the most important American experimental filmmakers and entrepreneurial promoters of the avant-garde in the 1940s and 1950s. Deren was also a choreographer, dancer, film theorist, poet, lecturer, writer and photographer.
The function of film, Deren believed, like most art forms, was to create an experience; each one of her films would evoke new conclusions, lending her focus to be dynamic and always-evolving. She combined her interests in dance, voodoo and subjective psychology in a series of surreal, perceptual, black and white short films. Using editing, multiple exposures, jump cutting, superimposition, slow-motion and other camera techniques to her fullest advantage, Deren creates continued motion through discontinued space, while abandoning the established notions of physical space and time, with the ability to turn her vision into a stream of consciousness. „Stadtlandschaften und Naturaufnahmen ferner Länder bilden nicht mehr den bloßen Widerspruch von Urbanität und ‚ursprünglicher’ Natur, sondern sind Erzeugnisse einer einzigen (kollektiven) Matrix des Bewußtseins, mal harmonisierend, mal widersprechend. Pacer looked at the world in a way no film had before it. The geometry of the city and its construction, the artistry of Montreal's landscape seen the hyper-prism of a camera racing through time on different dimension. Compressed imagery and physical motion combine in a never-been-seen-before kind of way. Pacer can lay claim to being the first hyperlapse film, or at the very least, to being the precursor to it's development. It was shot on a Bolex 16mm camera in Montreal, Quebec in 1995. Shooting single frames, all the 'effects' are done in camera. The film's original negative was destroyed in it's one and only printing in 1995. That print was screened once and telecined for posterity, and the print was never projected again. swivel is an impossible, obsessive and whimsical portrait of Shanghai created by an incessant panning camera. Digitally stitching together views of the city's interior and exterior realities, swivel is a far cry from cinéma-vérité, and yet, it shows us more of Shanghai in 15 minutes than do most feature-lengths portrayals. Caspar Stracke - Rong Xiang (Easy Thought)

Rong Xiang is a work on architectural replicas, piracy and its consequences. It is a comparison of LeCorbusier's chapel Notre Dame Du Haut in Ronchamp, France with its exact replica in Zhengzhou, Henan province in China. The work further compares LeCorbusier's human-scale informed "Modulor" concept with ancient Tao philosophy of Confucius and master builders of the Han dynasty. The Ronchamp replica in Zhengzhou is now a legend--it was short lived, erected in 1994 and demolished in 2006 after a three-year long dispute with the "Foundation LeCorbusier" in Paris. Aurelia Mihai - City of Bucur

„City of Bucur“ ist ein Kurzfilm über den Gründungsmythos Bukarests, dessen Handlung sich im Kontext der Gegenwart abspielt. Auf einem jener Hügel, die der legendäre Schäfer Bucur auswählte, um sich dort niederzulassen, steht das „Haus des Volkes“, architektonischer Ausdruck des Größenwahns der Ceauşescu-Diktatur und heutiger Sitz des rumänischen Parlamentes. Der Film erzählt in der Form eines „Making-Off" die Entstehung eines Kurzfilmes zum Gründungsmythos an genau diesem Ort. Schäfer, Regisseurin und Schafe begeben sich auf die Reise zum Drehort, der zugleich auch der Ursprungsort der Legende ist. (Aurelia Mihai)
