Klassiker reloaded:  Super-80ies (West-Berlin)

(Kurzflime der 80er-Jahre aus der geteilten Stadt)

Die 80er-Jahre gaben dem Experimentalfilm eine ganz neue Dynamik; ganz wesentlich dazu beigetragen hat das Format Super-8. In allen Metropolen, im Osten wie im Westen, wurde das Schmalfilmformat zum signifikanten Ausdrucksmedium für das neue Lebensgefühl der jungen Generation (der 'Zeitgeist' der 80er). Institutionen, Systeme und Strukturen wurden ignoriert oder sogar bekämpft, und ein Aufbruch ins Ungewisse wurde gewagt. – Post-Punk, No Future, Friedens- und Anti-Atomkraft-Bewegung, neue Musik-Stile und Multimedia-Konzepte, und auch der sog. Häuserkampf kamen in der Mauerstadt Berlin wie unter einem Brennglas zusammen. – Mit diesem Programm verdichten wir die bereits 'globalisierten' 80er-Jahre auf nur die erste Hälfte bis 1985, auf die Super8 als prägendes Medium und auf West-Berlin als Insel der 'Freiheit', die sich die Künstler*innen dieser Zeit einfach nahmen. Zwischen einem verwilderten Friedhof Westberlins und dem Kahlschlagkorridor im kommunistischen Machtbereich liegt ein angeblich totes Niemandsland. - Gegen Mittag erreicht der Hauptdarsteller den unumgänglichen Ort.
Between an overgrown West Berlin graveyard and a desolate stretch of land under communist rule, there is a supposedly dead no-man's land. Around noon, the main character arrives at this inevitable place.

Moscow 1983. Brezhnev was already dead, but Gorbachev not in sight. Andrea and me entered Moscow with a tourist visa, a tiny super8 camera, b/w film material and a nice peace of hashish. We wanted to know how Moscow did look like off the red square parades. High noon of the cold war, there was no footage availabel of people eg.: traveling by underground. How does a socialist shopping window look alike? are there shopping windows at all? back in Berlin i went to the CCCP Novosti-press agency for a Brezhnev foto. they were sceptical, but gave it to me. The young canadian film maker Lisan Thibodeau just arrived in Berlin, and lent Brezhnev her lips. The musik is composed by Günter "Ghazi" Friedenberg. The "rap" is clipped from a Brezhnev speach in font of the congress, wich Günter piched a bit to make it swing. Assistant director: Andrea Champ.
We included the "Brezhnev Rap" in our performance for the "Notorische Reflexe" show and was part of the "Notorische Reflexe" performance. From Moscow with love.

Accompanied by a score composed of music by Pere Ubu and Einstürzende Neubauten, a-b-city revolves around West-Berlin's psychodelic atmosphere. Brigitte Bühler and Dieter Hormel, who were renown for their fast paced and skillfully edited Super-8 clips, mix TV images and time-lapse shots of nightly streets, drifting clouds, and a man continuously jumping in front of the Berlin Wall. The video brings about an impression of the enclosed city that constantly shifts between ecstacy and depression.
