Yvonne Rainer - Privilege

(kuratiert und präsentiert von Rita Macedo)

‘Privilege’ starts as a seemingly straightforward interview-based documentary, in which Rainer talks to middle-aged women about their experience of menopause. However, very quickly, it turns into a film-within-a-film that is being made by Yvonne Washington, a fictional version of the filmmaker, as well as ‘many others’, as the credit in the beginning indicates. - Combining diverse cinematic styles and devices, while subverting genre and the very process of storytelling, ‘Privilege’ contemplates and ponders intersectionality - both in its aesthetics, as well as in the way that its themes and characters convey their complex and disparate experiences of a supposedly shared reality. Yvonne Rainer - Privilege
103 min | 1990 | DVD (16mm) | col+bw | mono | OVen | US

Yvonne Rainer (*1934 in San Francisco) trained as a modern dancer in New York from 1957 and began to choreograph her own work in 1960. When she made her first feature-length film in 1972, she had already influenced the world of dance and choreography for nearly a decade. From the beginning of her film career she inspired audiences to think about what they saw, interweaving the real and fictional, the personal and political, the concrete and abstract in imaginative, unpredictable ways.
