Kurzfilmprogramm: Internet-Phäno-Meme

Vom Creepypasta-Phänomen zum Internet-Meme – Das Programm spürt kuriosen und visuellen Phänomenen der frühen Youtube-Zeit nach. Verstörende, als gruselig empfundene Clips werden oft aus dem Kontext gerissen, verfremdet und bilden Vorlagen für sog. Creepypastas (Grusel- und Horrorgeschichten) und schließlich eigene Internet-Meme mit einer riesigen Community. Diese Clips bauen ganz eigene, visuelle Bildwelten und vermitteln kryptische Botschaften. Auch erzählen sie sinnfreie Geschichten. Als Abkömmlinge der digitalen Welt entfalten diese Clips ihren ganz eigenen Charme, und obwohl sie millionenfach geclickt werden, handelt es sich um ein Randphänomen, dass in der Schnelllebigkeit des Netzes besondere Aufmerksamkeit verdient. This short film flips back on itself. At exactly the midway point, the film begins to run backwards, and the sound repeats itself backwards with it. The character, speaks the three words backwards as the film goes forwards, so that they can be deciphered at the end of the film when they are played backwards. When looped, there is no actual beginning or end, and no real sense of where the beginning and end actually are. This piece was inspired by a personal paradoxical desire for empirical proof that there is nothing on the 'other' side of life. I wanted to blur the distinction between the two states, and to state the paradox by showing someone who is coming back from life (or death), and denies its existence, thereby fulfilling the paradox. This is a Special Time is a commercial for now defunct company Little Baby's Ice Cream, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The mini company, which started out by selling ice cream on tricycles in 2011, gained national attention in 2012 with this bizarre online advert. It features a man covered in ice cream named "Malcolm". During the ad, Malcolm eats himself with a spoon while a narrator speaks in the background about how much he loves Little Baby's Ice Cream.

A return to the stop-motion here with Crooked (Orcus) Rot. This started off as an experiment to see if stop-frame would be any better using an SLR camera. The result would certainly suggest so visually, but it was a hell of a lot harder. This project really began when I discovered a treasure cave of strange items in my own back yard including mannequin heads and rubber hands. It inspired me so much that every time I returned I gathered more inspiration. Originally I focused on capturing light which is why the SLR was so important, but eventually it almost became a sequel to Hell with all the blood flying about . Composer Marcus Fjellström who donated some of his music for Men From Up The Stairs became interested in the project when I posted a few screen shots on Newgrounds and went on to compose the entire musical score. This is interesting because it's the first time that I have made a video first and then sent it to someone else to do the music. This video is 100% stop-frame. There is no CGI, after effects or computer filters used to create any of the effects. (David Firth)
