Zu Beginn des Internetzeitalters war das GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) das maßgebliche Standardformat für Farb-Bilder online. Das GIF wurde 1987 entwickelt und vor allem wegen seiner effizienten Kompression (LZW) schnell populär. Außerdem erlaubte das GIF erstmals auch Bewegtbilder / Animationen im noch dünnbandigen Modem-Internet. In den 2010er Jahren erlebten GIF-Animationen ein überraschendes Comeback im Web, v.a. in den Bilder-Blogs; viele Künstler/innen und sogar Filmfestivals entdecken neuerdings das Format als ganz eigenes 'Medium' mit ganz eigenen künstlerischen Möglichkeiten. Angeregt durch die GIF-Art Ausstellung beim Moving Silence Festival Athens sind im Wintersemester 2014/15 auch einige GIF-Arbeiten in der Filmklasse entstanden. Die Besucher der Ausstellung können die GIF-Animationen via QR-Code direkt auf ihren Smartphones und Tablets anschauen.
At the dawn of the internet age, GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) was the main standard format for colour images online. It was developed in 1987 and quickly became popular, especially because of its efficient LZW compression. The GIF also allowed moving images/animations for the first time, with the low data rates of the modem-based internet. In the 2010s, GIF animations enjoyed a surprising comeback on the web, especially in picture-based blogs; many artists and even film festivals discovered the format anew as its own “medium” with its own artistic possibilities. Inspired by the GIF Art exhibition at the Moving Silence Festival in Athens, several GIF works were also created in the HBK film class during the winter semester of 2014/15. Exhibition visitors can view the GIF animations directly on their smartphones and tablets via the QR code.
