Kurzfilmprogramm: So fern und doch so nah.

(kuratiert und präsentiert von Michael Brynntrup)

Dieses Kurzfilmprogramm ist als Einstimmung in die experimentelle Bilderwelt Japans gedacht: So nah und doch so fern. Auch wenn wir feststellen können, dass die Filmsprache experimenteller Arbeiten international durchaus homogen aussieht, so kann der Fokus auf ein konkretes Land doch den Blick schärfen für die thematischen Eigenheiten einer Kultur (hier Japan). Uns begegnen ikonografische Topoi wie die 'entfremdeten', weiß geschminkten Körper im Butoh Tanz, Kaligraphien als 'action painting', meditative Naturstudien, die an Japanische Gärten erinnern, aber auch mediale Experimente, wie sie vielleicht nur in einem hochtechnisierten 'Land des Lächelns' entstehen können. "Scraps of deciduous films and photographs accumulate and eventually create new scenes.- Debris is made from many filmstrips (about 300 strips). These film strips have become trash with fragments of the film which has been cut off during the screening at the movie theater. I got them from my friend who was an owner of a small movie theater.
For movie theaters it may be trash, but for me, the fragments of the film felt very attractive. It is impossible to screen as a movie with one or a few frames of film. However, I observe one frame of each film piece accumulated, extract surface scratches and physical damage, and I reconstructed it into a new movie.
This work raises a question as to whether movies and photographs become trash." (KO)

Morishita Akihiko - Xénogénèse

Ein Experimentalfilm, der die Dualität seines Mediums in den Blick nimmt: Material und Bild. Ein Mann in Hemd und Krawatte – der Filmemacher selbst – läuft auf einem Schrottplatz im Kreis herum und verwischt diese Dualität zusehends, während mehr und mehr Laufstreifen auf der Oberfläche des Films erscheinen. Der Film nutzt Trompe-l’œil-Effekte, um sich auf humorvolle Weise mit dem Kreislauf des Lebens auseinanderzusetzen und ist, in seiner Funktion als ungewöhnliches Selbstportrait des Künstlers, gleichzeitig eine liebevoll-ironische Hommage an das Home-Movie-Genre. Xénogénèse feierte seine Berliner Premiere im Jahr 1984 im Internationalen Forum des Jungen Films, in einem Programm, das sich dem Image Forum Tokyo widmete. In diesem Jahr wird eine neu hergestellte 16-mm-Kopie als Vorfilm in mehreren Vorstellungen erneut im Forum zu sehen sein. Der Filmkopie wurden mit einer dafür eigens hergestellten Vorrichtung Laufstreifen manuell zugefügt. Eine Digitalisierung des Films, die exklusiv für das Forum Expanded produziert wurde, wird als Ein-Kanal-Videoinstallation präsentiert. Akihiko Morishita wurde 1952 in Kanagawa, Japan, geboren. Seine Arbeit umfasst experimentelle Filme und Videos. Derzeit arbeitet er an der Gründung eines Vereins für die Erhaltung und Restaurierung experimenteller Film- und Videoarbeiten in Japan.

Sankai Juku - Butoh Dance at Battersea Power Station (London)

Sankai Juku is an internationally known butoh dance troupe. Co-founded by Amagatsu Ushio in 1975, they are touring worldwide, performing and teaching. As of 2010, Sankai Juku had performed in 43 countries and visited more than 700 cities.
Butoh’s source is the Japanese avant-garde of the 1960s, a period when Japan struggled with the lingering effects of the atomic bomb detonations at Hiroshima and Nagasaki that ended World War II. Originally called "ankoku butoh," or "dance of darkness," the medium created a space for the intensely grotesque and perverse on the stage. Amagatsu's work exhibits the conventional tensions of butoh and envelops them in a mood of emotional stillness. “Sankai Juku” means "studio by the mountain and the sea" and implies the serenity and calm which is characteristic of the work.
